…acted as a catalyst for the official change from the imperial God Save the Queen. Football historian Trevor Thompson notes that in 1923 the Australian team stood to attention for Advance Australia Fair in a match against a Chinese XI in Sydney. Not knowing what to play for the Chinese, the band then played For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow. When Marjorie Jackson won gold at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952, the Finnish hosts played the official anthem, God Save The Queen and Advance Australia Fair. When Shirley Strickland won gold the next day, both anthems were played again. The confusion was indicative of Australia’s national question and continued loyalty to what Whitlam’s attorney general, Lionel Murphy, would later call “the relics of colonialism”.…
